Much Work Remains

When the BR-111™ Foundation renovated and reopened the historic Monte Alegre School in Brazil, the goal was simple; enroll underprivileged children from the poverty stricken “Bosque” neighborhood in Piracicaba, and through education and socialization, encourage life-long learning in an effort to promote a higher standard of living and quality of life.

Lofty goals. You bet. Yet three years later, the school has a proven track record of success and has drawn praise from leaders throughout the local community. Today 85 children receive education and social services along with balanced meals daily and regular healthcare checkups.

While each of these children is fortunate enough to leave the poverty of their neighborhood behind for precious hours a day, the true gift is reflected in their improved self esteem, zest for life and hope for a brighter future.

Without the support of BR-111’s partners in the flooring industry, corporations in both the US and Brazil, as well as private citizens here and abroad, the success of the school and its family outreach programs simply would not be possible.

From all of us at the BR-111™ Foundation and RUMO, we sincerely extend our heartfelt gratitude!

Student Success Stories:
Joao Paulo Tobias Silva

Joao entered the RUMO program in 2006 and is currently seven years old. It was obvious from the start that Joao was extremely introverted and socially isolated. While he desperately wanted to excel at the simplest tasks, Joao placed high demands on himself and was incapable of following age appropriate work to completion. In addition, he was unable to socialize with classmates and appeared to live in a world of his own, playing alone and talking loudly to his toys.

Gradually Joao began to develop a nurturing bond with his teacher and the staff at the school. He started to open up, take risks and socialize with the other children. RUMO also worked closely with the family to assure behavior modification tools were implemented at home. Today Joao is a well adjusted seven year old, popular with many of his peers and excelling at each task placed before him.
